Performing a medley of patriotic songs and the National Anthem. \nInvocation and benediction given by Rev. Dr. Stuart Lamkin of the First Baptist Church of Weaverville. \nScottie Harris currently the Weaverville Town Manager\, transitioned from the Weaverville Fire Chief in 2024\, but began his career tenure in the fire and emergency services field as a volunteer firefighter and rescue squad member in 1990. He joined the United States Air Force Reserves (USAF) in 1991 and graduated from the Air Force Crash Fire Rescue school at Chanute Air Force Base in Champaign\, IL. Over 30-plus years of service landed him in various locations: Iraq\, Afghanistan\, Kuwait & US Navy Base Diego Garcia. \nActing as Town Manager during September 2024\, Tropical Storm Helene struck Western North Carolina\, and under Manager Harris’ leadership and fortunately having an emergency services background as well as FEMA Certified Incident Command System; he began planning\, preparation stages\, recovery\, and emergency implementation strategies for counter-acting the disaster of last year. First and foremost being emergency services and rescue\, water distribution and restoration\, electrical power\, and communications restoration. The Town continues today to implement strategic aftermath planning with the State\, local inter-government and Federal agencies. \nWeaverville Police Dept. Rifle Squad video featuring “Taps” by the Fire Department. \nProgram to conclude with Harold Dusenbury playing “Amazing Grace” live on the bagpipes. Thank you to the Patriot Committee for organizing the event\, as we honor those who lost their lives during an act of terrorism causing the deaths of 1\,500 civilians\, 343 members of the NYFD\, 71 Law Enforcement Officers\, & 55 military personnel\, not to mention the aftermath of people who died or had complications from toxins and /or mental health PTSD due to the rescue operations. \nMake an impact on the mental health and wellness of the Weaverville Police Department by contributing to “Stand TALL.” This initiative is dedicated to supporting the well-being of law enforcement officers\, ensuring they have the resources and support they need to perform their duties effectively. The fireworks display will follow. Arrive early for family fun and claim your spot\, get food and beverages from Main Street establishments and other local vendors! It is better to leave your four-legged family members at the house. They may miss you\, but they will thank you in the long run.\n\n\nNo alcohol.\n\nThis shindig is family friendly\, and everyone knows that family friendly shindigs don’t allow alcohol! Seriously\, no alcohol allowed!\n\n\nNo sparklers.\n\nWhy no sparklers (or any other types of fireworks) at a July 4th celebration? Simple\, sparklers burn at 1200 degrees! There will be thousands of people occupying a small area\, and the chances that someone will get injured is high!\n\n\n\nSuggestions for having a great time:\n\nWear sunscreen. If you plan on arriving prior to 5 o’clock pm\, the sun’s rays are still dangerous. As my grandfather would always tell me\, “The skin issues I have now\, came from sun exposure decades ago!”\nBring water. July is hot\, and when you are having fun\, you may not realize how much fluid your body has lost. Bring a couple bottles of water to help keep dehydration under control.\nBe patient. It’s easy to get in a hurry! Hurry to get here\, hurry to park\, hurry to find a good spot in front of the stage\, hurry to get the great treats from the vendors. Take an extra moment to plan your day so that your 4th doesn’t seem to be more of a hurried bother than a relaxing day of celebration.\nCommunity policing mindset. The Weaverville Police Department is charged with the safety of the community on a broad basis. All citizens should be mindful of any suspicious or illegal activity and report it immediately! There will be several uniformed officers at the event as well as two units from our new bicycle patrol division. DESCRIPTION:Weaverville’s annual observation of Memorial Day will be held at 11:00 a.m.\, Monday\, May 26th at the Community Center overlooking Lake Louise. \nGuest speaker is Major General Joseph G. (Skip) Garrett III (retired). Major General Garrett graduated from the Citadel in Charleston\, S.C.\, in 1969 and was commissioned in the U.S. Army\, where he spent a 32-year career. After retiring from the army\, Skip served as the vice president and deputy for Patriot Programs at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems. Now fully retired\, he resides in Asheville\, N.C. \nThe invocation and benediction will be provided by Pastor Rebecca Gurney of Reems Creek-Beech Presbyterian Church of Weaverville. The Asheville Senior Chorus will lead the singing of the National Anthem along with a patriotic song medley. The program includes a moving video of the ‘rifle salute’ by the Weaverville Police Department Squad and taps by the Weaverville Fire Department. Amazing Grace will be performed live on bagpipes by Howard Dusenbury. \nPlease join us as we honor our fallen men and women\, who have served and protected our country. Free parking is available at the Community Center\, the above Outdoor Rec. Center lot\, as well as adjacent parking below the Community Center.
