DESCRIPTION:Veteran Day guest speaker\, Major General Gill Beck (Retired) graduated from Appalachian State class of 1978 as App State’s Senior Athlete of the year and second in his class with a 3.98 grade-point average. Beck was awarded a NCAA Post-Graduate and Department of Defense scholarships\, and he attended Duke University School of Law where he earned a Juris Doctorate in 1985. \nBeck has spent over 25 years serving in the U.S. Army Reserves. While serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney\, Beck represented the U.S. in litigation. Beck earned the highest Department of Justice Award\, the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service award\, for participation in a 1997 initiative\, LABSCAM\, which recovered over $186 million from laboratories defrauding the United States. \nIn 2006\, as a result of his efforts to help build a judicial system in Iraq\, Beck was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by Major General William H. Brandenburg. The medal is awarded to any person who “distinguished himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service\, not involving participation in aerial flight\, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy; or while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.” \nMr. Beck served as the first Army Judge Advocate to command a two-star U.S. Army Reserve unit and also commanded the Army Reserve Legal Command.  Over the course of his military career\, Major General Beck has served the United States overseas\, including in 2005 in Iraq\, where he led a joint legal team prosecuting terrorists. During 2007\, as an Associate Deputy General Counsel in the Office of General Counsel\, Department of Defense\, in the Pentagon\, he provided legal advice on Iraq and Afghanistan issues in support of the surge in Iraq\, and in 2008\, he served as Executive Officer to the Army General Counsel\, who was responsible for supervising Army attorneys throughout the world. From 2009-2011\, he served as the Chief Judge (Individual Mobilization Augmentee) to the Army Court of Criminal Appeals. For his service\, Major General Beck has been awarded the Bronze Star\, the Legion of Merit\, and numerous other awards. \n \nTown Hall and Town Offices Closed. \nPlease join the Town’s Veterans Day Observance held at the Community Center\, 60 Lakeshore Drive on Tuesday\, November 11th at 11:00 a.m. Program provided by the Patriot Committee. \nProgram: Invocation and benediction by Rev. Sept. 27th at 11:00 a.m. at Lake Louise Park. (begins at the Flag Pole in front of the Community Center)\n\n\n \n\n\nSeptember 27\, 2025\, will mark exactly one year since catastrophic Hurricane Helene devastated much of the greater Asheville area\, including our cherished\, historic mill wheel on Reems Creek.\n\n\n \n\n\nWe invite you to celebrate Weaverville’s remarkable resilience and rebirth made possible by all the tireless efforts of our Town Public Works crews and emergency services staff\, merchants\, and neighbors helping neighbors since then. \n\n\n Weaverville Strong event from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at Lake Louise Park.\n\n\n \n\n\nMayor Patrick Fitzsimmons\, Buncombe County Commissioner Amanda Edwards (scheduled to appear) and our own Dry Ridge Historian Judy Craggs will present brief remarks\, advance look at the framework of the new Reems Creek mill waterwheel\, currently pending completion 150 years after its original installation by the Robinson Family. DESCRIPTION:18th Annual Art in Autumn returns Sat.\, Sept. 20\, 2025 from 10am – 6pm. \nThis event is hosted by the Weaverville Business Association and brings over 100 juried artists from across the Southeast to Main Street. \nFree and open to the public. Booths will line downtown Main Street from Weaver House to Maggie B’s. Regional musicians will play beginning at 10:30 a.m. in front of Rodney’s covered garage\, with Mitch Hampton at 10:30 am\, Steve Trisman & Friends at 12 noon\, Maddi and Clarke at 1:30\, and Steelin’ Time at 3:00. Local restaurants will be open. \nThe Art in Autumn Committee is still seeking a few more volunteers for the show. Volunteers help with a variety of tasks\, including booth relief for the artists\, parking\, and staffing the information booth. Each volunteer gets a free t-shirt and a super fun day working with great people. DESCRIPTION:Weaverville 9/11 Observance Program \nBeginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Center\, 60 Lakeshore Dr. \nVeteran and current Town Manager\, Scottie Harris will serve as the guest speaker. \nMusic provided by the Valley Mountain A-Capella Men’s Choir\, directed by Clay Plemmons. Performing a medley of patriotic songs and the National Anthem. \nInvocation and benediction given by Rev. Dr. Stuart Lamkin of the First Baptist Church of Weaverville. \nScottie Harris currently the Weaverville Town Manager\, transitioned from the Weaverville Fire Chief in 2024\, but began his career tenure in the fire and emergency services field as a volunteer firefighter and rescue squad member in 1990. He joined the United States Air Force Reserves (USAF) in 1991 and graduated from the Air Force Crash Fire Rescue school at Chanute Air Force Base in Champaign\, IL. Over 30-plus years of service landed him in various locations: Iraq\, Afghanistan\, Kuwait & US Navy Base Diego Garcia. \nActing as Town Manager during September 2024\, Tropical Storm Helene struck Western North Carolina\, and under Manager Harris’ leadership and fortunately having an emergency services background as well as FEMA Certified Incident Command System; he began planning\, preparation stages\, recovery\, and emergency implementation strategies for counter-acting the disaster of last year. First and foremost being emergency services and rescue\, water distribution and restoration\, electrical power\, and communications restoration. The Town continues today to implement strategic aftermath planning with the State\, local inter-government and Federal agencies. \nWeaverville Police Dept. Rifle Squad video featuring “Taps” by the Fire Department. \nProgram to conclude with Harold Dusenbury playing “Amazing Grace” live on the bagpipes. Thank you to the Patriot Committee for organizing the event\, as we honor those who lost their lives during an act of terrorism causing the deaths of 1\,500 civilians\, 343 members of the NYFD\, 71 Law Enforcement Officers\, & 55 military personnel\, not to mention the aftermath of people who died or had complications from toxins and /or mental health PTSD due to the rescue operations. \nMake an impact on the mental health and wellness of the Weaverville Police Department by contributing to “Stand TALL.” This initiative is dedicated to supporting the well-being of law enforcement officers\, ensuring they have the resources and support they need to perform their duties effectively.
