The Town of Weaverville, North Carolina, is seeking a Police Chief who is visionary and has a demonstrated history of innovative and strategic leadership. The Police Chief is the public face of the Police Department, therefore the successful candidate must be able to foster effective relationships with the community, Town Manager, Mayor and Town Council Members, regional law enforcement partners, as well as department staff and officers. In addition, the Police Chief must possess excellent communication and critical thinking skills and a proven track record in 21st Century policing.
About the Department and Position:
The Police Chief reports to the Town Manager and is responsible for planning, directing, implementing and evaluating all activities of the Police Department. Duties also involve preparing the annual budget, establishing departmental policies and procedures, overseeing recruitment, selection, development and training of personnel and ensuring that all departmental programs operative efficiently. The position requires independence, initiative, good judgment, strong leadership, solid communication skills and the ability to interact with others in a professional, friendly and respectful manner. The Police Chief is responsible for leading the Police Department in a community of approximately 4,000 residents, who expect high levels of service and community engagement. The Department has a $1.6 million budget, 14 sworn personnel and an administrative assistant.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in criminal justice or other relevant field; Ten (10) years of progressive law enforcement experience to include at least five (5) years of command level service; or an equivalent combination of training, experience and education which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities for the position. Completion of minimum requirements established by the NC Justice Training & Standards Council for Certified Law Enforcement Officers required. Advanced law enforcement certification preferred. Must possess valid NC drivers license; Ability to work flexible hours, including evening meetings and events as needed. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, psychological evaluation, comprehensive background investigation and credit check.
Salary Range and Application Process:
Hiring range is $71,780 to $87,162. Starting salary dependent on experience and qualifications.
