Doug Dearth

Council Member

Doug Dearth has served as a Town Council Member since 2009.  In addition to normal Council duties, Dearth is Weaverville’s representative to the Metropolitan Planning Organization Board and its various subcommittees and working groups. He was a member of the former Buncombe County Parks and Greenways Commission and serves as liaison on Greenways issues. He is also a member of the Main Street Nature Park Steering Committee and the Community Wildlife Habitat Team.  He served on the Town Planning and Zoning Board from 2004 to 2009 and served as Board Chair from 2005.  He is also a member of the Weaverville Business Association.

Doug earned both his B.A. and M.A.  from Ohio State University (B.A. 1969; M.A., 1971) and attended the U.S. Army War College (1986) where he also became a Faculty member (1990-1993).

Dearth is a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War.  He served in various capacities in the U.S. Department of Defense until 2002, and was a security consultant to the British Government from 1998 to 2006, as well as Senior Associate Research Fellow at King’s College, London. He also has been a lecturer, author and editor.

He resides at 34 Hamburg Drive, the old “Preach” Reagan House, which they renovated in 2002-2004.  Maura serves on the faculty of A-B Tech.  In their spare time, they enjoy gardening and landscaping the property; and Doug also does dry-stack stone work.
