9/11 Observance

Weaverville 9/11 Observance Program

Beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Center, 60 Lakeshore Dr.

Veteran and current Town Manager, Scottie Harris will serve as the guest speaker.

Music provided by the Valley Mountain A-Capella Men’s Choir, directed by Clay Plemmons. Performing a medley of patriotic songs and the National Anthem.

Invocation and benediction given by Rev. Dr. Stuart Lamkin of the First Baptist Church of Weaverville.

Scottie Harris currently the Weaverville Town Manager, transitioned from the Weaverville Fire Chief in 2024, but began his career tenure in the fire and emergency services field as a volunteer firefighter and rescue squad member in 1990. He joined the United States Air Force Reserves (USAF) in 1991 and graduated from the Air Force Crash Fire Rescue school at Chanute Air Force Base in Champaign, IL. Over 30-plus years of service landed him in various locations: Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait & US Navy Base Diego Garcia.

Acting as Town Manager during September 2024, Tropical Storm Helene struck Western North Carolina, and under Manager Harris’ leadership and fortunately having an emergency services background as well as FEMA Certified Incident Command System; he began planning, preparation stages, recovery, and emergency implementation strategies for counter-acting the disaster of last year. First and foremost being emergency services and rescue, water distribution and restoration, electrical power, and communications restoration. The Town continues today to implement strategic aftermath planning with the State, local inter-government and Federal agencies.

Program to conclude with Harold Dusenbury playing “Amazing Grace” live on the bagpipes. Thank you to the Patriot Committee for organizing the event, as we honor those who lost their lives during an act of terrorism causing the deaths of 1,500 civilians, 343 members of the NYFD, 71 Law Enforcement Officers, & 55 military personnel, not to mention the aftermath of people who died or had complications from toxins and /or mental health PTSD due to the rescue operations.
