Weaverville Watershed Property Hurricane Helene Cleanup
The primary purpose of the Weaverville Watershed Property Hurricane Helene Cleanup Project is to reduce wildfire risks by identifying funding and authorizing contract services to clean up downed trees and heavy vegetation.

The project focuses on the Eller Cove Watershed (within the 310-acre Weaverville Watershed protected under a conservation easement), where massive storm debris has created a dangerous fuel load. By clearing out these fallen trees and vegetation, the initiative aims to protect critical water quality and preserve local wildlife habitats from future disasters.

Key Objectives

  • Wildfire Mitigation: High volumes of fallen, drying wood create a severe “fuel load.” Clearing this debris dramatically lowers the risk of catastrophic wildfires that could threaten nearby homes.
  • Water Quality Protection: Ensuring the integrity of the Eller Cove Watershed protects local water resources and prevents soil erosion from degrading water channels.
  • Habitat Preservation: Controlled, professional clearing allows the native ecosystem and local wildlife habitats to safely recover without being choked out by storm debris.
  • Easement Compliance: All cleanup operations are carefully coordinated to comply with the long-term conservation easement protecting this land.

A public information meeting was held on September 10, 2026 and was very well attended. You may view the presentation by clicking the link below.
