Hurricane Helene devastated many art studios, galleries, and retail establishments as it swept through the mountains. While some of the affected creatives and entrepreneurs are planning to rebuild in their original flood zone locations, others may be considering alternatives.
The Town of Weaverville’s Economic Development Advisory Committee (WEDAC) has identified a largely empty 132,000 square foot industrial building that could be re-purposed as an arts and retail destination. The former factory is located on Reems Creek Road, a few minutes from downtown Weaverville and a short drive from Asheville’s River Arts District. The proposed site potentially offers at least 20 windowed and 10 non-windowed studios, plus a large central open space for walk-through showcasing of artworks.
At this stage, WEDAC’s goal is to introduce artists and retailers to the (as yet unrenovated) space with the idea of assessing demand. Please feel free to approach our WEDAC members with any thoughts, questions, or concerns you may have about the concept. We would greatly appreciate your input as we move forward in our discussions with potential renovators and investors.
WEDAC serves the Town of Weaverville in an advisory capacity. Its mission is to identify and promote economic development opportunities that enhance the quality of life in our town and the region.
