The Weaverville Fire Department, consisting of 24 full time and 10 part time personnel, plays a critical role in public safety for the Town, responding to fires, medical emergency calls, and other hazardous situations. The department also works to educate the public about safety issues and inspects businesses for proper fire safety and suppression equipment. The Weaverville Fire Department has achieved an ISO rating of 2 within Town limits and a 3 in the North Buncombe Fire District.
Meet our Fire Chief
Chief Canafax
Fire Chief Ray Canafax will officially step into the role on April 20, 2026. Chief Canafax brings more than 32 years of fire service experience and over 20 years of fire-related training to Weaverville.
Previously, Canafax served as deputy fire chief at the City of Huntington Fire Department in West Virginia, a position he retired from in 2024, and has been working with Grayson Volunteer Fire Department in Kentucky since 2025. Canafax holds many fire and rescue training certificates, as well as an associate’s degree in occupational development from Mountwest Community and Technical College in Huntington, West Virginia.
“I am honored to be named the next fire chief for the town of Weaverville. I look forward to working alongside the dedicated members of the department and the town’s leadership team to build upon the strong foundation already in place while continuing to provide the highest level of emergency services to our community,” Canafax said in a press release.
Local leaders have been enthusiastic about the addition of Canafax to the Weaverville public safety team.
“With an advertisement that went nationwide we were very fortunate to end up with several highly qualified candidates from Western North Carolina and other states for the position of fire chief. The interview process consisted of multiple rounds using internal and external assessors evaluating the candidates and I am pleased to say Chief Ray Canafax rose to the top,” Scottie Harris, Weaverville town manager, stated in the release. “Chief Canafax will bring not only leadership and operational experience, but a strong background in grants and professional development of others. He will be an instrumental part of the team as our fire department and town grows.”

Programs & Services
The Weaverville Fire Department serves the public within the Town’s limits and the North Buncombe Fire District. Please feel free to call us about any of the following programs at (828) 645-3500. Blood Pressure Checks
Personnel of the Weaverville Fire Department are happy to check your blood pressure for you at anytime. Please come by the station and any of our staff will be happy to assist.
Career Fairs
A member of the Weaverville Fire Department will staff an informational booth at your event and discuss educational, physical, and training requirements of the job and explain the application process to become a firefighter.
Child Car Seat Safety Inspections
The Weaverville Fire Department will be happy to check your child’s car seat installaion according to proper safety standards. In order to have your child’s seat checked, you need only to go to the Fire Station and ask one of the firefighters to check the seat for you or offer training on the proper installation. Community Outreach and Education
The Weaverville Fire Department conducts a variety of public education presentations and attends many community events. All of our public education outreach is delivered free of charge. To schedule a presentation or request that fire department staff attend your event, please call the Department.
Fire Extinguisher Training
The Weaverville Fire Department is happy to train residents and workers of Town businesses on the proper use of fire extinguishers.
Fire Safety Presentations
For Groups:
A trained member of our Fire Department will speak to your church, community group, HOAs, or at your place of business, to deliver specially prepared fire safety messages and provide fire safety materials.
For Schools:
We will send a truck or a firefighter to your school to teach fire safety messages and show the fire truck and our fire gear. We can specially tailor a fire safety message to align with your curriculum needs.
Fire Station Tours
The Weaverville Fire Station, located at 3 Monticello Road is open to the public every day. If we’re not on a call, we’ll happily show you and your family around the station and the fire trucks. If you’ll be visiting with a group, please call or email to schedule a time and station at least two (2) weeks in advance to ensure availability.
Home Safety Inspections
We will visit your home and conduct a room to room survey to look for potential fire hazards and offer suggestions to keep you and your family safer. In addition, we conduct Foster Home Fire Inspections.
Smoke Alarm Assistance
The fire department offers assistance with smoke alarms. If you need help testing an alarm, changing the battery, installing or replacing an alarm, call or email to schedule a time with a fire department representative. We are unable to replace hardwired alarms if the wiring harnesses are not compatible.

Where is the nearest Fire Station?

How do I obtain a copy of a fire report?
An official fire report can be obtained by contacting the Weaverville Fire Department at (828) 645-3500. It usually takes at least twenty-four (24) hours for the fire report to become available. Once notified that the report is available, you can retrieve it at:

What should I do if I see an emergency vehicle approaching while I’m driving?
Motorists should pull their vehicles safely to the right when an emergency vehicle is approaching. It is not recommended to stop in the middle of the road or proceed through an intersection against the signals. Remember to safely pull to the right.
Does the fire department refill fire extinguishers?
Unfortunately, the Weaverville Fire Department does not refill fire extinguishers. It is recommended that you contact a commercial fire extinguisher company for recharging. A listing of commercial fire extinguisher companies can be found in the local phone directory under fire extinguishers/equipment. Many household fire extinguishers cannot be recharged and must be discarded after use. An annual inspection of the expiration date is encouraged to ensure that the manufacturer date has not expired.
Do buildings within the town require any approval from the fire department?
The Weaverville Fire Department has a full time Fire Marshal with duties including inspection of buildings during the site plan phase, the building phase, and the maintenance of the building throughout its life. Fire inspections are carried out on an ongoing basis with special attention paid to new buildings.
Why do fire trucks respond to emergency medical calls?
Our firefighters are also trained as EMT’s. We often arrive prior to the ambulance and begin life saving techniques. The firefighters will arrive and begin treatment immediately, often resulting in a better outcome for the patient. In a more complicated medical emergency, the Fire Department personnel will be needed to assist the two paramedics on the ambulance. Our Fire Department is committed to providing the highest level of care possible and this means getting the emergency responders on scene as quickly as possible.
Can I park in the fire lane if I need to load, unload or make a quick stop?
No, the fire lane is a vital part of the entry/exit of a building. The Fire Marshal or a Police Officer will ask someone to move from the fire lane or may to write a citation and leave it on the vehicle. The section of code that is being enforced is located in the the North Carolina State Building Code Volume V “Fire Prevention” states that fire lane is part of the fire appartus access to a building, in section 503.4 it states “Fire apparatus access roads shall not be obstructed in any manner including parking of vehicles.”
