Weaverville’s annual observation of Memorial Day will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 26th at the Community Center overlooking Lake Louise.
Guest speaker is Major General Joseph G. (Skip) Garrett III (retired). Major General Garrett graduated from the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., in 1969 and was commissioned in the U.S. Army, where he spent a 32-year career. After retiring from the army, Skip served as the vice president and deputy for Patriot Programs at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems. Now fully retired, he resides in Asheville, N.C.
The invocation and benediction will be provided by Pastor Rebecca Gurney of Reems Creek-Beech Presbyterian Church of Weaverville. The Asheville Senior Chorus will lead the singing of the National Anthem along with a patriotic song medley. The program includes a moving video of the ‘rifle salute’ by the Weaverville Police Department Squad and taps by the Weaverville Fire Department. Amazing Grace will be performed live on bagpipes by Howard Dusenbury.
