Press Release: Town of Weaverville & Weaverville Police Department

September 28, 2023, Weaverville, N.C. – The Weaverville Police Department continuously assesses the current and future needs of the police department and town. Concerning the patrol fleet, some factors considered were usage, budget, efficiency, and town goals. It was decided several years ago to transition our patrol fleet to exclusively hybrid vehicles because of their exceptional fuel efficiency. Investments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions via the transition to hybrid vehicles proved successful, with a notable reduction in gas consumption, idling, maintenance issues, and energy waste.

Building on the success of hybrid vehicles, and with the support of town leadership, we have become the first municipality in Western North Carolina to add electric vehicles to the patrol fleet. This program took over a year, and creative collaboration with Sound Off Signal and Global Public Safety to make the shared vision a reality. The town also received grant funding to bolster its electric vehicle infrastructure. Despite challenges, our hope is to determine how we may someday fully transition away from fossil fuels.
